In a process for the production of a polyolefin support material used as a colonisation surface for microorganisms, first closed-cell polyolefin elements are foamed, and the closed-cell structure of the polyolefin elements is subsequently opened up into an at least partially open-cell structure by the external and/or internal action of force.
