A process-controller Abst within each switching stage Kost extracts the originating and destination points of a switching request from a speech channel. It then selects a free path or channel using an occupancy list Belist. It writes this to a holding memory Hasp which controls a speech memory Sprasp. The connection is thereby through-connected, bypassing the process-controller Abst. Any as yet unprocessed selection information is forwarded via a signalling channel Meka-A to the output A and then to the next switching stage Kost. A connection is cleared down by recording the release of the path or channel in the occupancy list Belist and by erasing the corresponding space in the holding memory Hasp. <IMAGE>
