PURPOSE:To cope with a partial pattern deformation of each character satisfactorily by classfying a deformation part dictionary pattern set by basic part dictionary pattern according to the basic part dictionary pattern and by registering it in an auxiliary recognition dictionary. CONSTITUTION:Features of a character pattern inputted with a pen 2 on a tablet device 1 are extracted, and the character pattern is segmented at every character in a detection and segmentation part 3. A recognition part 4 collates features of an input pattern with those of a standard dictionary pattern registered in a recognition dictionary 5, and obtains a character recognition result. The recognition dictionary 5 consists of a main recognition dictionary and an auxiliary recognition dictionary. The latter classifies a basic part dictionary pattern which is obtained at every plural blocks by dividing a basic character pattern in accordance with a radical, etc., and a deformation part dictionary pattern which is set at every basic part dictionary pattern by the basic part dictionary pattern, and registers them. Furthermore a dictinonary preparation part 6 can easily perform an additionl registration of a new deformation part dictionary pattern.
