Within the longitudinal edge region (9), provided for the mat covering, there is provided in at least one transverse bar (2) an approximately V-shaped bend (3) which extends upwards from the side to be covered. The first, longitudinal-edge-side leg of each bend (3) is arranged at a small angle to the plane of the mat, and the second, inner-side leg thereof is arranged at a larger angle thereto. The inner-side, steeper leg of each bend (3) forms a position-securing means for a longitudinal reinforcing bar (1) of the covering longitudinal-edge region (10) of the next reinforcing mat. <IMAGE>
