The invention relates to a method for assembling structures, and especially pieces of furniture characterised in that the only elements characteristic of this structure allow assembly without the aid of any fastening agent. This assembly method comprises uprights and cross-members connected to form portal structures a, and stiffeners c, c' whose ends are assembled into a tube b, the other end of the stiffeners c, c' being held by a central tube d. The positioning of the load-bearing surface e between the top part of the portal structures a tending to move them apart, gives rise to action at the point x on the stiffeners c, c' thus bracing and rigidifying the whole structure. <IMAGE>
