The invention relates to a chain wheel for driving flat-topped chains or a deflection roller for its vertical deflection, the chain wheel or the deflection roller being divided in an axial plane and the two wheel parts being connected to one another by connecting elements, such as screws. In contrast to known designs, where the connecting elements are formed from axially parallel screws, according to the invention the connecting elements, which directly connect the chain wheel parts to one another, each of which chain wheel parts consists of half a hub, half a toothed wheel rim and half a wheel disc between the latter two elements, are arranged, with central lines extending to the outside circumference of the chain wheel in a secant-like manner, in the space between the hub and the toothed wheel rim on the one hand and between the two end face bounding planes of the chain wheel on the other hand, so as to be exposed facing outwards.
