The device has a control appliance (20), which emits a control variable depending on the degrees of freedom of movement, the control variable being produced by friction forces which are caused by mutual contact pressure of at least a first part, which is arranged on the base, and of at least a second part, which is arranged on the base and can move relative to the first part. In order to achieve the positioning and the stabilisation following it in a very short time, the control appliance (20) has a computer stage (22; 30-34) which is set up to produce, on the one hand for positioning, in each case one signal, which is composed of the direction deviation ( DELTA phi ) and its speed ( DELTA phi ) as well as the vectorial square of the velocity ( DELTA phi ¦ DELTA phi ¦), and for stabilising, a signal which is proportional to the direction deviation ( DELTA phi ) and its time integral ( INTEGRAL DELTA phi dt), the computer stage having as its output element a summing element (23) which emits a required signal (MSoll). Such devices are used for positioning and orientation stabilisation of the barrel of the weapon in particular in tracked vehicles. <IMAGE>
