To manufacture or process brushes, in particular toothbrushes, having bristle tufts of different length, a pressure element (8) is arranged in a processing device (1), eg. a cutting device, by means of which pressure element the longer bristle tufts (7) can be deflected out of the processing plane (B) when the shorter bristle tufts are processed. In this case, the bristle tufts are pressurised mainly at their free ends (11) so that the bending of the bristle tufts can be distributed over their entire length. Permanent deformation of this bending is thus avoided. The rows of bristle tufts to be deflected are deflected, particularly, in the longitudinal direction of the bristle area. As a result, it is also possible to deflect not only outer, longer bristle tufts (7) but also longer bristle tufts (7) arranged further inwards, within the bristle area (4) (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
