A stoma rod for securing an intestinal loop, which, following surgical formation of a stoma opening in the abdominal wall, is pulled outside the latter without cutting of the intestine, is flexible so that it can be curved or bent about its transverse centre plane and can subsequently return to the original straightened state. The acquired effect is that a bandage having an opening which closes tightly around the stoma can be led down over the stoma rod in its folded or bent position so that the rod no longer has to be manoeuvred to and fro beneath the intestinal loop in order to get the bandage in place, a manoeuvre which can lead to risk of infections and of the piece of intestine sliding back into the abdominal hole, as well as to pain and discomfort for the patient. The rod can be elastically flexible, so that it returns to its straightened normal position once the bending stress is actuated, or it can be bistable so that, once bent, it cannot return to the straightened position until new external stress is applied. If the rod is elastically flexible, the flexibility can advantageously be localized to one or two zones symmetrically situated about the transverse centre plane of the rod and can expediently depend upon the rod material weakening in the face of the bending stress within the zone or zones 34, 35, for example by virtue of reduced material thickness. Expediently, the rod can in this case have a substantially U-shaped cross sectional profile and can possibly be provided with reinforcing strips or transverse reinforcing plates 36, 37 outside the weakened zones. If the rod is bistable, it can have members, for example compression springs or preferably traction springs, for securing the rod in the bent position until an external stress makes it return to the straightened normal position. <IMAGE>
