4-Aminobutan-1-ol is prepared by reacting 4-chlorobutyronitrile or 4-bromobutyronitrile with hydrogen by means of a noble - metal catalyst in the presence of an inert solvent and in the presence of hydrogen chloride or hydrogen bromide and, after the catalyst has been removed, treating the reaction mixture with water at elevated temperatures. Finally, 4-aminobutan-1-ol is liberated by adding a strong base.
