The invention describes a rotary engine, especially a rotary piston internal combustion engine, with a rotor (3) supported eccentrically in relation to the cylindrical casing (1), which rotor (3) has a radially displaceable slide valve piston (7), on the outer end of which a swivellable sliding shoe (9) is provided. In the rotor a recess is provided, in which the sliding shoe can submerge radially. The essential characteristic lies in the fact that only a single slide valve piston (7) is provided, that between each of the two cylinder covers (2) and the end faces of the rotor (3) a guide disc (10) is arranged, which is designed rotatable about the cylinder axis (5). For the purpose of positive guiding of the piston the sliding shoe (9) is fixed by each of its axial ends to one of the two guide discs (10), the sliding surface of the sliding shoe (9) sliding along the inner surface of the casing with a constant clearance, but without friction. In addition, in the casing (1) in the area of the smallest clearance between cylinder and rotor a seal (15) interacting with the rotor is arranged. <IMAGE>
