In the tubular-bag machine having a vertical filling tube (3), a foil (9) is shaped in the upper part to form a tube and is closed on the circumference by means of a longitudinal seam. Located inside the filling tube are flaps (18) which are fastened pivotably to a chain (16) in a hoist-like manner and which, during the downward movement, are intended for receiving the articles (32) to be packed, such as fruit or vegetables. During the inactive downward movement, the flaps (18) assume a space-saving hanging position. It is thereby possible to introduce the articles to be packed into the bag carefully, with a free falling height being avoided. <IMAGE>
