PURPOSE:To recognize precisely the remaining capcity of a battery even in atmosphere different in ambient temperature by calculating the remaining capacity of the battery by using correction coefficients corresponding respectively to temperature regions higher and lower than reference temperature. CONSTITUTION:The difference between the no-load voltage of the battery 1 obtained by a no-load voltage value measuring means 4 and the minimum no-load voltage obtained by a minimum voltage measuring means 5 right after a switch 3 is turned on and when an in-use load 2 is connected is calculated by a difference voltage arithmetic means 7 and supplied to a remaining capacity arithmetic circuit 8. On the other hand, a stable voltage by a stable voltage value measuring means 6 which corresponds to a load current a specific time after the switch 3 is turned on and the ambient temperature detected value of the battery 1 are also supplied to the circuit 8. The circuit 8 judges the ambient temperature is higher or lower than the reference temperature from the outputs of the means 7 and 8 to add a corresponding correction coefficient to a voltage drop, and calculates and weights two remaining capacities to output the real remaining capacity of the battery. Thus, the remaining capacity of the battery is recognized precisely even when the ambient temperature varies.
