PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fibers having uniform characteristics even in a folded state of wound raw material cloth by a calcination furnace without using an N2 gas, embedding a permeable heat-resistant container charged with raw material fibers in carbon powder, heat-treating the raw material fibers so that they are carbonized. CONSTITUTION:Raw material fiber cloth 1 for carbon fiber is folded, and put in the heat-resistant container 2 having permeability. It is then placed in the container 4 having the carbon powder 3, and the raw material fiber cloth is heat- treated at the maximum temperature of 1,100 deg.C, and carbonized to give the desired carbon fiber.
