PURPOSE:To prevent the movement of an electrolyte in an electrolyte holding matrix and suppress the deterioration of the cell performance by changing the electrolyte saturation absorption quantities of an anode and a cathode so as to decrease the electrolyte saturation absorption quantity of the cathode. CONSTITUTION:A cathode 12 made with a porous substrate 14 and a catalyst carrying layer 15 and an anode 13 made with a porous substrate 16 and a catalyst carrying layer 17 are provided across an electrolyte holding matrix 11, and gas separation plates 18, 20 are arranged outside them to form a fuel cell of a phosphoric acid type, etc. In this case, the electrolyte saturation absorption quantity of the anode 13 is made 3.0-20.0 times as large as that of the cathode 12; particularly for a phosphoric acid type, the cathode side is made 3-6mg/cm<2> and the anode side is made 20mg/cm<2> or less. Accordingly, the decrease of the cell voltage caused by the movement of the phosphoric acid in the matrix 11 from the anode 13 to the cathode 12 can be suppressed, and the life of the cell can be extended. |
