PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material of adrenocortical hormone and luteohormone, economically in an industrial scale, by heating the deodorized distillate of repeseed oil containing brassicasterol in a lower fatty acid alcohol containing excess alkali, and cooling the product. CONSTITUTION:The deodorized distillate of rapeseed oil containing >=0.5% brassicasterol is heated in a 1-4C lower fatty acid alcohol (e.g. methanol) having a water-content of 0-80vol%, preferably 5-10% and containing excess NaOH or KOH. The glyceride in the distillate is saponified by this process. The product is cooled to separate brassicasterol in the form of solid, and the sterol is preferably separated from the reaction liquid, and washed or recrystallized with hexane.
