PURPOSE:To obtain granular active carbon having improved strength of wear resistance without lowering adsorption performance, by covering a precursor of granular active carbon with pitch and tar, carbonizing and activating it. CONSTITUTION:A precursor of granular active carbon such as granulated coal, or preheated coal, prepared in either process after granulation process and before activation treatment, is covered with a mixture of tar and pitch. An amount of the covering material is <= about 30pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. precursor. The tar and pitch of the covering material are carbonized and the prepared carbonized coal is activated by a conventional procedure. Granular active carbon having improved adsorption performance and wear resistance is obtained by this process. |
