NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I [R<1> is methyl, ethyl, propyl; R<2> is lower alkyl; R is phenyl which may be substituted; X is Cl, methyl] and its acid adduct which is permissible as a drug. EXAMPLE:2,6-Dimethyl-5-ethoxycarbonyl-3-N-ethoxycarbonyl-4-( 2'-nitrophenyl )- 3,4-dihydropyrimidine. USE:A remedy for cardiovascular diseases: it has powerful vasodilation action at the same level as nicardipine and is used to treat for improvement in cerebral circulation and stenocardia. PREPARATION:For example, a tautomer of formula II or III is allowed to react with an alkyl chloroformate or dialkyl carbonate in an organic solvent such as chloroform in the presence of a base such as triethylamine to give the compound of formula I .
