Chelating resins (A) including monomer units of formula (I) are new. In the formula A is H or CH3, R is H 1-6C alkyl or Y, X is 1-12C alkylene opt. incorporating O or NY gps. Y is CH2COOZ, Z is H, alkali metal or NH4+. Pref Z is H or Na, X is a gp. -(CH2)-m D-((CH2)n-D)-x (CH2)-m (x= 0 or 1 m and n = 1-4) D is a bond, O or NY) and R is 1-6C alkyl or Y. Specifically X is -(CH2)-2 .NY-(CH2)-2. The resins are made by ammonolysis (with polyamines) of a crosslinked acrylate or acrylonitrile copolymer, then alkylation with Hal-Y. They are suitable for all usual applications of metal chelating resins but esp. (a) as plant growth media when they incorporate suitable trace metals, and (b) with enzymes esp with amyloglucosidase for converting dextrin to glucose.
