PURPOSE:To enable uniform coloring of the surface of an optical glass irrespectively of an inorg. or org. glass material, and to enhance coloring and decoloring speeds and durability by forming a thin film made of a solid soln. or eutectic specified in composition on the surface of the optical material by vapor deposition, and further forming a protective layer made of an inorg. dielectric. CONSTITUTION:The thin film essentially consisting of the ternary solid soln. or eutectic of Ag-Cu-X, X being Cl, Br, or I, also same after this, is vapor deposited on the surface of the optical material, and further, a protective film made of an inorg. dielectric. Necessary three components are selected from AgX, CuX, CuX2, metallic Ag, metallic Cu, etc., and the thin film of a compsn. having satisfactory photochromic performance is vapor deposited on the surface of the optical material. In this compsn., Cu contributes to the oxidation reduction reaction of Au, serving as a sensitizer for photochromic action. The inorg. dielectric, such as SiO2, used for the protective layer prevents outward diffusion of X and enhances durability, and improves abrasion resistance. Such photochromic film can be applied to both inorg. and org. optical glass materials. |
