The generator converts one binary number into another but with a much greater number of digits, or converts an input word into another word with a much greater number of digits in its code. A series of shift registers (10.1-10.N) with two outputs (10.n 10.N) is connected to EXCLUSIVE-OR gate (13) and the output of this unit is connected to the input of register (10.1). The output sequence is taken from the outputs (12) of the registers. The number to be converted is placed at inputs (11.1 to 11.N). In order to obtain a single value relation between the converted and original words, the number of pulse difference between them is varied to correspond with the value of the original word so that it depends on the number of pulses in the original word.
