A process and a reactor are proposed for carrying out exothermal catalytic reactions. The invention provides a reactor cooled by indirect heat exchange in which it is essential that two heat exchangers are arranged within a catalyst bed, one heat exchanger being provided for generating steam, and the other heat exchanger being provided for overheating a gaseous or vaporous coolant. The overheating takes place in the inlet region of the reactor.
