Described is a cutting device with a portable plunging router which is equipped with a frame-shaped base plate provided with parallel columns and a drive unit which can be adjusted on the columns relative to the base plate and has a drive journal for a tool, which drive journal projects from an end housing cover. The base plate can be attached to the side of a work guide remote from the workpiece. The work guide is provided with an opening for the tool to pass through. In this arrangement, the base plate of the plunging router is connected via a pivot spindle to a holder which can be fastened in a stationary position and has pivoting segments for locking the pivoted position of the plunging router. This enables the plane head or the plane shaft together with the entire plunging router unit to be set at an angle to the guide surface for the workpiece so that various types of profiling are possible and the machining of workpieces which was not possible hitherto in a similar simple manner can be carried out.
