PURPOSE:To simplify the liquefaction process, and to enable the effective utilization of circulating solvent, by supply the liquefied product of a coal liquefaction process to an aqueous slurry of coal powder, and granulating the coal powder using the liquefied product as the binder. CONSTITUTION:Coal 11 is crushed usually to <=2-3mm. and thrown into a wet crusher 15 together with water 13 to obtain a coal-water slurry 17 having a coal powder concentration of preferably 10-50%. The slurry is, if necessary, diluted with water 19, and introduced into the granulator 23. Separately, the granulator 23 is fed with a granulation binder comprising the liquefied product 41 (usually light oil, medium oil and/or heavy oil) produced by the liquefaction process 39, and if necessary, with a pH-controlling agent. When the slurry is agitated in the granulator 23, the surface of the oleophilic coal is coated with the circulating solvent, and the coal powder is coagulated and granulated by the binding effect of the liquefied product and the shearing force caused by the agitation.
