In order to keep infective agents or the like away from that part of a piston rod (24) which projects from a medical syringe, especially a perfusion syringe (18), a preferably hood-shaped or fingerstall-like protective sheath (12) of an elastic, stretchable material is pushed over this part and fastened so as to rest tightly with its free peripheral edge or edge section (16) against the syringe barrel (32). Pushing the protective sheath (12) over said actuation part (14) of the syringe (18) is effected by means of a spreading sleeve (10) whose internal diameter is somewhat larger than the outer diameter or the maximum outside dimensions of the actuation part (14) of the syringe (18) and on which the free peripheral edge or edge section (16) is held under radial pre-stress or tension when the hood-shaped or fingerstall-like protective sheath (12) is used. <IMAGE>
