In an adaptive crosstalk and/or echo cancelling circuit located on the four-wire side in parallel with a hybrid circuit and having a variable filter and a cancellation signal logic element, the cancellation signal is formed depending on the - if necessary averaged - difference between the discriminator output signal formed after the signal cancellation and following adaptive signal equalisation and the discriminator input signal, by setting the filter coefficients in the case of a significant - if necessary averaged - difference between the discriminator input signal and the discriminator output signal according to the cancelled received signal - or even only its sign - and in the case of an insignificant - if necessary averaged - difference according to this difference - or even only its sign. A compromise equalisation of the received signal is carried out after the crosstalk and/or echo cancellation. <IMAGE>
