In order to obtain as homogeneous a temperature profile as possible of a stream of glass in a glass tunnel kiln, flames are directed from above on to the stream of glass. Preferably the flames are directed vertically up to the lateral edge regions of the stream of glass. The forehearth according to the invention has a channel (11) in which the glass melt (12) flows and, in addition to lateral horizontal burners (19), has additional vertical burners (31), the flames of which are directed essentially vertically on to the edge regions of the glass melt (12). <IMAGE>
