A container (12) is tightly closed by means of a lid (10) with interposition of a sealing ring (24). The lid has a non-return venting valve (40), via which the container can be evacuated by connection to a suction pump. Provided on the lid (10) is a venting valve (46) which has a hand-operable tappet (54) with which the valve can be opened and pressure compensation can be produced. The container serves for receiving household foodstuffs which can be kept fresh longer after evacuation of the container. <IMAGE>
