PURPOSE:To attain read of a form printed by different type face by setting a font discrimination reading region on the form, selecting a corresponding recognition dictionary and read the type. CONSTITUTION:When a mark recognizing section 13 recognizes a font identification mark code 11a of a column of a form 11 as a mark and when the content of the mark is [blank] the data is converted respectively to a ''0'' code and when ''1'', a ''1'' code, and an identification signal 13a is outputted to a font decision section 14. A font decision code of each type face is stored in the memory 15 in advance, the decision section 14 detects the font decision code of each type face represented by the signal 13a from the memory 15 and a control signal 14a is transmitted. A dictionary selection section 16 selects recognizing dictionaries 18, 19 and 20 storing type face corresponding to the signal 14a. Then signals 18a, 19a, 20a are stored in the memory in the character reader 17 as the signal 16a via the selection section 16 and the device 17 is started at the same time. The device 17 executes the reading of a type in the form 1 by the stored recognizing dictionary.
