A container (209) having attached to it at least one memory device (214) carrying information relating to the intended contents of the container (209); the device being operably connectable to operating means including means responsive to information communicated from said memory device (214) whereby an operation actively involving the contents of the container (209) may be performed in a manner at least partly determined by the characteristics of the contents.
