PURPOSE:A herbicide, containing aristolochic acid as an active constituent, and capable of exhibiting improved herbicidal effect on various weeds without showing no phytotoxicity to main crops, e.g. soybeans and rice plants. CONSTITUTION:A herbicide containing aristolochic acid {=8-methoxy-6-nitrophanthro[3,4-d]-1,3-dioxole-5-carboxylic acid} or an extract from a plant containing the same as an active constituent. The above-mentioned compound is reported to be isolated from a plant of the family Aristolochiaceae and have anticancer and antimicrobial action. For example, the above-mentioned compound is extracted from leaf and stem of Cocculus tricobus DC. which is a plant of the family menispermaceae by the usual extraction method with an organic solvent, e.g. ethyl acetate, and concentration, etc. The above-mentioned herbicide is mixe with a carrier or adjurant, formulated into an emulsion, wettable powder granule, suspension, etc. and used by soil or foliar treatment of treatment under flooded conditions before or after the germination of weeds, e.g. stellaria neglecta Weihe, fat hen, green amaranth or green foxtail, etc.
