PURPOSE:To prevent a photographer from careless mis-shooting without sensing it by displaying whether or not the level of the recorded video signal is set within a proper range. CONSTITUTION:A signal processing circuit 4, a recording circuit 5 and an integrated circuit 8 are actuated by the signal fed from a sequence controller 6 in the next field after the exposure is through to an image pickup element 2. The video signal sent from the element 2 is processed by the circuit 4 and recorded to a magnetic tape, etc. by the circuit 5. At the same time, a luminance signal Y is extracted out of the video signal and integrated by the circuit 8. A window comparator 9 is kept active for a fixed period of time after the end of the integrating operation of the circuit 8. Then the comparator 9 outputs no pulse of a high level if the output of the circuit 8 is set within a proper range. Then the comparator 9 outputs a pulse when the output of the circuit 8 is set out of the proper range. Thus a pulse of a high level is outputted from the comparator 9 in case a fault is detected in terms of the level of the video signal.
