PURPOSE:To recover the valuable metals incorporated into slag at a good yield by subjecting the slag generated in the stage of refining various metals to an electrolytic treatment with a molten salt. CONSTITUTION:Granular metals are incorporated in a suspended state in slag for refining non-ferrous metals such as Cu, Zn, Pb, Sn, Fe-Ni, etc. and exist also in the form of metallic compd. in said slag. Such molten slag is put into a carbon crucible 2 having a magnesia lining 4 in the side part in an electric furnace 1 and is maintained in the molten state in the furnace 1. Electricity is conducted to a graphite electrode 3 suspended as anode at the center of the furnace and to the bottom of the crucible 2 as cathode from a DC power source. The part suspending in the slag in the metal state settles from the molten slag to the bottom of the crucible on account of a difference in specific gravity. The metal existing in the form of the compd. is decomposed and deposits as metal on the cathode. The deposited metal is separated and recovered together with the settled metal from the molten slag.
