Antimicrobial, quaternary ammonium compounds which comprise didecyl- and decyl-n-decyl-dimethylammonium salts, where the expression "decyl" denotes a derivative of a decyl alcohol which is essentially a mixture of branched, primary decanols, in which there is a chain having at least two side chains, with the dominant constituent being trimethyl heptanol, and where the expression "n-decyl" denotes a derivative of a normal decyl alcohol.
