HYDRODENITRIFICATION OF HYDROCARBON OIL

PURPOSE:To denitrify a hydrocarbon oil with a high nitrogen content efficiently without causing lowering of catalyst acitivity, by increasing the sulfur content of a raw material hydrocarbon oil to an appropriate level before performing hydrodenitrification. CONSTITUTION:A raw material hydrocarbon oil having a high nitrogen content (about 0.6wt% or higher) and a low sulfur content (about 0.8wt% or lower) (e.g. fraction with a boiling point of 100 deg.C or higher obtained from oil shale or coal) is refined by catalytic hydrodenitrification by use of a catalyst such as Ni supported by alumina. Before refining, an org. sulfur compd. (e.g. sulfide or thiophene) is added to the raw material hydrocarbon oil to increase the ratio of the sulfur content to the nitrogen content to 1.5 or higher by weight and the oil is broguht into contact with the catalyst in a high-temp. and high-pressure hydrogen atmos.
