A liquid crystalline material. The crystalline material of the invention contains an azo dye of formula: <IMAGE> in which X denotes H, -CN, -CF3, a halogen, -OCF3, -COOR7, -OR7, -SR7, -NR7R8 or A-N=N-, L, M denote an optionally substituted 1,4-phenylene or -naphthylene residue, A, B are the residue of a coupling agent, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 denote H, a halogen, a trifluoromethyl, nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylcarbonyl, alkylthio or alkoxycarbonyl group, m and n are equal to 0, 1 or 2, provided that the sum m + n is equal to 1 or 2, R7 and R8 denoting hydrogen or organic radicals. The invention also relates to the new azo dye of the formula I.
