The invention relates to the recovery and purification of methacrylic acid produced by the vapour phase in the catalytic oxydehydrogenation of isobutyric acid, in which method the problem of downstream plugging is avoided by the inclusion of a small amount of surfactant in the gaseous effluent at or near the point of its condensation.
