A steel-hard, carbide-composite, wear-resistant body is produced by blending 20-70 wt.% steel-forming powders with 30-80 wt.% of hard carbide particles (I) of particle size 2.5-400 mesh; cold pressing to produce a preform; and densifying by high-temp. and high-pressure diffusion bonding and sintering. (I) is selected from hard carbides of W, T, Ta, Nb, Zr, V, Hf composites. The matrix material(25) may be steel and iron, steel and Cu, or steel and nickel. (I) may also be coated with a metal prior to mixing with the steel. Steel-cemented hard-carbide alloys are produced that are free of binary interstitial alloys of Fe and W.
|
