A metallic or non-metallic outer ring for spiral-wound flange seals of known construction, which is wound from a pre-impressed strip having an identical or similar profile as the actual spiral sealing element. In consequence, the normal design, which is produced in a costly manner primarily in the case of large seals, of the outer ring consisting of plate material is replaced, and the assembly of the sealing element and of the outer centring ring is largely automated in a cost-saving manner.
