In order to prevent in fuel tanks, which are equipped in the upper area of the tank's interior with an expansion tank connected to an expansion line, fuel from backing up in the expansion tank and being able to flow into the open by way of the expansion line, it is proposed to provide, at each of the open ends of the expansion tank, positioned in front of these, a swivellable flap, which automatically swivels back from the closed into the open position and to assign to the flap a double-armed pendulum element, the arm of which interacting with the flap loosely bears on that side of the flap remote from the open end of the expansion tank and at the same time to design the distance of the point of contact between flap and pendulum element from a horizontal plane containing the swivel axis of the pendulum element greater than its distance from a horizontal plane containing the swivel axis of the flap. This arrangement ensures that when the flap swivels back into its open position a larger opening cross-section is immediately produced which permits a rapid and complete discharge of fuel which has entered the expansion tank.
