PURPOSE:A humectant that is composed of a combination of a water-soluble silicon compound bearing silanol groups and a water-soluble polymeric substance, thus showing high humectant effect without clammy feeling. CONSTITUTION:The objective humectant is composed of a combination of (A) a silicon compound bearing at least one, preferably 1-3 silanol groups in the molecule, preferably a compound of the formula: RnSi(OH)4-n (R is 1-6C alkyl, aralkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy; n is 0, 1-3) with (B) a water-soluble polymeric substance, preferably bearing at least one OH or NH2, preferably both of them such as mucopolysaccharide, cellulosic derivative, or PVA. The amounts of both components are at a weight ratio of 1:10-10:1 and it is added to cosmetics by 0.1-10wt%. As a component B, mucopolysaccharide, or water-soluble glycoprotein, which is physiologically active to skin and soluble in water, is preferably used.
