<p>The pulley-clutch is mounted directly on the engine crankshaft extension (12) and, by means of a single vee-belt, drives all auxiliaries including - alternator, air pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor, and power steering. These auxiliaries together represent a substantial proportion of the load on the engine. This electrically actuated pulley-clutch enables the load of all the auxiliaries to be disconnected from the engine during starting and during periods of vehicle acceleration, by an appropriate automatic control system. - The pulley (36) forms the cast housing of the clutch, supported on the outboard bearing (38) on the end of the crankshaft. The energising coil of the electromagnetic clutch is fed via the lead wires (32 and 46) and the overhung slip ring assembly (30).</p> |
