PURPOSE:To produce efficiently inexpensive foil-shaped austenitic steel powder having high strength by subjecting austenitic steel powder having an adequate characteristic to working with adequate cumulative work by a stamp mill. CONSTITUTION:Austenitic steel powder which is obtd. by a water atomizing method and consists of the structure having <=300mu average grain size and >=60% austenite is used as a raw material. Such steel powder is subjected to stamp mill working at (30-1,000)X10<3>kgf.m cumulative work for each 1kg of the raw material steel powder and is subjected, if necessary, to >=1 times of heat treatment at 400-1,300 deg.C in the mid-way of the working or is added with an adequate amt. of lubricating agent such as stearic acid, by which the foil-shaped austenitic steel powder having <=5mu thickness is obtd. The above-mentioned foil- shaped steel powder has high strength and is adequate as a pigment or electromagnetic shielding material or as a material for electrically conductive plastics.
