NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-10C alkyl). EXAMPLE:4-(trans-5-pentyl-1,3-dioxa-2-yl)benzoic acid 3-fluoro-4-cyanophenyl ester. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal material. It has large positive dielectric anisotropy, broad liquid crystal temperature range, high clear point and excellent stability. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by reacting the 4- (trans-5-pentyl-1,3-dioxa-2-yl)benzoic acid chloride of formula II with 3-fluoro-4- cyanophenol of formula III in a basic solvent such as pyridine, triethylamine, etc.
