PURPOSE:To provide a variety of titled imides having high heat resistance and producible easily by reacting a dihydric phenol with an aminophenol and a dihalogenobenzonitrile in a solvent in the presence of an alkali, and reacting the product with pyromellitic dianhydride. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyether imide has the recurring unit of formula I (Ar is group of formula II, formula III, etc.; R is S, O, bivalent 1-13C hydrocarbon group, etc.; n is 1-50), the terminal groups consisting of -NH2, the group of formula IV or formula V, and a reduced viscosity (etasp/c) of >=0.2dl/g at 30 deg.C at a concentration of 0.2g/dl in N-methylpyrrolidone solvent. The polymer can be produced by reacting the dihydric phenol of formula OH-Ar-OH with the aminophenol of formula VI and the dihalogenobenzonitrile of formula VII (X is halogen) in the presence of a solvent and an alkali, and reacting the reaction product with pyromellitic dianhydride.
