<p>PURPOSE:To improve monodomain formability or initial orientability of a liquid crystal by moving a liquid crystal cell from the 1st constant temp. region set at the temp. higher than the phase transfer temp. to the 2nd constant temp. region set at the temp. lower than the phase transfer temp. CONSTITUTION:A constant temp. region 1' has a thermostatic cell 1 and a constant temp. region 2' has a thermostatic cell 2. Heaters 3, 3' and 3'', 3''' are controlled independently in the cells 1, 2. The region 1 is controlled to a high temp. T1 and the region 2 to a low temp. T2 so that for example, a liquid crystal cell 7 exhibits an isotropic phase and exhibits uniaxially anisotropy at the temp. T2. A heat insulating body for forming a heat insulating region 5 is provided at the boundary 4 between the cell 1 and the cell 2. The uniaxially anisotropic phase is uniformly formed successively from the side face 17' of a nucleus generating member 17 provided in the cell 7 toward the direction perpendicular to the plane of the figure when the cell 7 is moved at a low speed toward an arrow 18 direction by an arm 8 connected to a low-speed gear. The monodomain formability or initial orientability of the liquid crystal is thus improved.</p> |
