The machine is equipped with a ballast excavating device (10, 11), a vibrating screen arrangement (15), conveyor belts (13, 14, 23, 27, 28, 29) for the ballast and excavated material and a ballast distributing device (24) with a steerable distributing member (35) and with two outlet shafts (25, 26), the first (25) of which opens above the cleared bed base and the second (26) of which opens above a distributing conveyor belt (27) leading to the track region already worked. During an interruption of travel, the vibrating screen arrangement (15) is automatically switched off, the entire ballast which is still passing into the distributing device (24) is diverted to the second outlet shaft (26) and the speed of the distributing conveyor belt (27) and a conveyor belt (23) connecting the screen outlet (33) to the distributing device (24) is reduced; the last-mentioned conveyor belt (23) is switched off only at the time when the vibrating screen arrangement (15) has come to rest, and the distributing conveyor belt (27) at the latest at this time. As a result, it is brought about that, during a stop of the machine, no ballast can accumulate on the cleared bed. <IMAGE>
