PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer having improved transparency, etc. in high conversion in a short time, by incorporating a specific substance, e.g. alpha-methylstyrene, with other monomers in a specific proportion, and copolymerizing the resultant mixture in the presence of a specific organic peroxide as an initiator by the suspension or block polymerization method. CONSTITUTION:A monomeric mixture consisting of (A) 10-80wt%, preferably 20-80wt% alpha-methylstyrene, (B) 5-50wt%, preferably 10-40wt% acrylonitrile, and (C) 0-70wt% one or more of styrene, chlorostyrene, p-methylstyrene, tert- butylstyrene, acrylic acid ester and methacrylic acid ester is copolymerized in the presence of an organic peroxide of the formula (n is >=1), e.g. di-tert-butyl peroxyazelate, as an initiator at 80-120 deg.C, preferably 95-120 deg.C polymerization temperature by the suspension or block polymerization method to give the aimed copolymer. EFFECT:The above-mentioned copolymer has improved heat resistance and strength.
