PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of a dictionary and to shorten the collation time by selecting preferentially a stroke, whose angle to a tracing stroke is smaller, from two branching strokes as the stroke to be next traced. CONSTITUTION:In case of character pattern H having trifurcate character branches B is traced, tracing is started from a character end point T1, and the stroke whose angle to the tracing stroke is smaller is selected in the trifurcate branch B and is traced, and the first tracing is terminated at an end point T3, and the second tracing is started from a character end point T4 and is terminated at an end point T5, and the third tracing is started from a character branch 6 and is terminated with the other branch 2, and tracing results shown by arrows 1, 2, and 3 in the figure are attained, and they are equal to tracing results of character pattern H which is not deformed.
