PURPOSE:To prevent the breakdown of a length meter rationally, by isolating the length meter when a leading part and a rear end part of a belt shaped body having irregular shapes pass positions, where these parts contact with the length meter. CONSTITUTION:A length meter 14 is mainly constituted of the following parts: steel belt detectors 16 and 18, which are provided on the downstream side and the upstream side of the meter; a lifting machine 20, which supports the length meter 14 so that it is freely moved up and down and makes the length meter 14 to be contacted with or isolated from a steel belt 12; and a control device 22, which performs program processing and operation for control of the lifting machine 20 and the measurement of the length. A program is stored beforehand in the control device so that either of the two steel belt detector 16 or 18 is isolated when it is not detecting the steel belt 12. Therefore, the irregular parts of the leading part and the rear end part of the belt shaped body are not interfered with the length meter. Thus the breakdown of the length meter can be prevented rationally.
